Education and Appointments:

Prof. Feng Zhao has led research in environmental electrochemistry and biotechnology at IUE since 2010. His work focuses on microbial-electrochemistry, wastewater bio-treatment and resource recovery from waste. Prof. Zhao received his doctorate in Analytical Chemistry at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, CAS, in 2004, after which he spent two years as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Greifswald in Germany working on the development of low-cost microbial-electrochemical techniques for wastewater treatment. Thereafter, he came to the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom as a senior research officer, and there his research focused on the development of bio-electrochemical systems for wastewater treatment and renewable energy generation. In 2010, Dr. Zhao joined the IUE, and has served as the Deputy Director of the CAS Key Laboratory of Urban Pollutant Conversion. As of January, 2020, Professor Zhao has published 126 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Science Advances, Nature Communications, Chemical Society Reviews, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Environmental Science & Technology, Water Research, Analytical Chemistry with more than 5,500 citations and an H-index of 40 (Web of Science). Dr. Zhao was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2017, and he was the Otto Monsted Professor at the Technical University of Denmark in 2015–2016. Prof. Zhao has received several awards, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China “Distinguished Young Scientist”,the Award of Young Scientist of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has also served on numerous national and international scientific bodies.
