Interface process of biogenic elements and micro-ecological mechanism of reductive gas emission in urban coastal wetland

Project Title: Interface process of biogenic elements and micro-ecological mechanism of reductive gas emission in urban coastal wetland

Project Type: Major Programs of Knowledge Innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Project No. KZCX2-YW-Q02-04

Project Awardee: Changzhou Yan

Project Abstract: Ttransport, tranformation, fate of Biogenic elements (Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Sulfur) and its biological effects on reductive gas emission are significant biogeochemical processes in urban coastal wetlands. In this study, researchers at Institute of urban environment will use mangrove wetland ecosystem nearby Xiamen sea area, China as a representative of coastal environments close to populated cities to study interface process of biogenic elements and microecological mechanisms of reductive gas emission in urban coastal wetland. The main objectives of this proposed research are to: (1) investigate the transported load of biogenic elements and the emission amount of reductive gas (methane, nitrous oxide and sulfureted hydrogen); (2) determine the effects of nutrient and salinity level, alternated process of wetting and drying, and vegetation classifcation on interface process of biogenic elements; (3) identify the micro-ecological mechanism of reductive gas emission. The proposed project will provide insights into biogeochemisry of biogenic elements, eutrophication control and regulation of reductive gas emission, and will improve accuracy and relevancy of the weight-of-evidence of decision-making process for field managers.

Period of Project: 2009.1 – 2011.12
