Project Title: Molecular monitoring and dynamics of functional microbial community during biodegradation of pyrene in red soil

Project Type: Chinese National Natural Science Foundation

Project No.: 40801118

Project Awardee: Cai Chao

Project Abstract:In this project, we select pyrene as a model PAH to investigate its whole microbial degradation processes systematically using a combination of DNA-based stable isotope probing (SIP) and highly sensitive realtime PCR methods. The objectives of this project are to develop a model of molecular monitoring of PAHs microbial degradation process using functional marker genes, to analyze changes of functional microbial community diversity in PAHs degradation process and to screen key environmental factors in regulating microbial degradation processes of the model PAH (pyrene) in a typical red soil in southern China. Fulfillments of this project will improve our knowledge in microbial-mediated degradation of high molecular weight PAHs and make a progress in developing microbial techniques for remediation of high molecular weight PAHs contamination in acidic red soils.

Period of Project: 2009.1-- 2011.12

Fund of Project: ¥200,000
