Project Title: A study on the influence mechanism of urban land use pattern on the biodiversity and stability of aquatic phytoplankton communities: a case in Xiamen
Project Type: The National Natural Science Foundation of China
Project Approval No. 30800148
Project Awardee: Guo Qing-hai
Project Abstract: The spatial pattern of water quality and phytoplankton composition in Yundang lake, Hubian reservoir, Bantou-Shidou reservoir, and Tingxi reservoir in Xiamen, which changed during urbanization development in different periods, will be investigated by the ‘3S’, exampling analysis, and modeling simulation technologies in this project. To study the spatio-temporal changes in water quality and phytoplankton composition, and the reasons which cause the changes, some typical parameters (i.e. landscape parameters, nutrients, and heavy metals,) will be measured. Analysis of land use pattern and discussion about the interaction mechanism between water environment and land use pattern will be operated. Furthermore, the relationship of land use pattern with water quality, the relationship of water quality with algal pattern, and the response mechanism among land use, water quality and phytoplankton community will all be revealed. The objectives of this project are: to elucidate the mechanism of biodiversity and stability of aquatic algal communities influenced by urbanization; to develop an ecological approach to land use pattern regulation for aquatic algal health and stability. This project will help to show pattern and process in urban ecosystem, to illustrate the influence of urbanization on eco-environment, to determine ecological conservation targets, to guide urban planning and water environmental protection in sustainable urbanization.
