State Key Laboratory of Advanced Environmental Equipment and Pollution Control Technology

The State Key Laboratory of Advanced Environmental Equipment and Pollution Control Technology (hereinafter referred to as the "Environmental Laboratory") is based at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIG, CAS). It was established by integrating the strengths of the Institute's original "State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry" (approved in 1989) with those of the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IUE, CAS) and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). The establishment of the Environmental Laboratory was approved by the Chinese Academy of Sciences on November 28, 2024, and officially approved for construction by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China on January 10, 2025.

The Environmental Laboratory focuses on major scientific and technological issues related to the precise identification and prevention of combined pollution. It aims to achieve breakthroughs in key technological bottlenecks in the research and development of core high-end environmental equipment and advanced materials for pollution prevention. It innovates in cross-media synergistic prevention and control systems for combined pollution, enhancing China's autonomous and controllable capabilities in advanced environmental equipment and its level of pollution prevention technology. This provides scientific and technological support for the continued and in-depth implementation of the battle against pollution. The Laboratory's research directions include environmental monitoring and detection equipment, pollution prevention materials and technologies, and cross-media synergistic governance of combined pollution.

The Laboratory currently has 102 permanent staff members, including 89 scientific researchers and 13 technical support personnel. Its distinguished team includes 1 Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 Members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 15 recipients of the Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (Category A), 22 recipients of the "Four Young" national talent programs, and 4 Innovation Research Groups supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). It comprises 60 personnel with senior professional titles and 33 with associate senior professional titles, with personnel holding senior titles accounting for 91% of the staff. Throughout its long-term development, the Laboratory has led the nation's scientific and technological progress in fields such as regional organic pollution processes and effects, diesel vehicle exhaust purification, wastewater biological treatment and real-time monitoring, and high-end environmental mass spectrometry technology and equipment. The Laboratory possesses internationally advanced research platforms including smog chamber simulation platforms, accelerator mass spectrometry systems, volatile organic compound analysis platforms, and the "Maritime Silk Road" environmental pollution observation network. It is currently dedicated to building and improving platforms for environmental mass spectrometry research and development, advanced material development, and combined pollution simulation. In recent years, the Laboratory has led numerous major national, provincial, and ministerial-level projects in related fields, including Major Research Projects and Innovation Research Group Projects of the NSFC, National Key Research and Development Program projects, CAS Class C Pioneer Science and Technology Projects, as well as Major Projects of the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation and Key Research and Development Program projects of Guangdong Province. The Laboratory has been awarded 2 Second-Class Prizes of the National Natural Science Award and 2 Second-Class Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Furthermore, 8 policy recommendations have received approval instructions from national leaders or have been adopted by relevant ministries and commissions.
