Institute of Urban Environment (IUE), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) hosted “2018 Sino-Japan Symposium for Industrial Ecology” in conjunction with University of Tokyo during Nov 28 to Dec 2, 2018, Xiamen.
The symposium was sponsored by the Bureau of International Co-operation Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Wei-Qiang Chen from IUE, CAS and associate professor Ichiro Daigo, from the University of Tokyo co-chaired the symposium. More than 50 scholars and graduate students from IUE, CAS, the University of Tokyo, Ritsumeikan University, Waseda University, Nagoya University, Northeastern University (Japan), Japan's national industrial technology research institute (AIST), Bologna University, Tsinghua University, Nankai University, Beijing Normal University, Northeast University (China), Central South University were invited to share their academic insights.
The symposium began with welcome remarks by Professor Weiqiang Chen and Associate Professor Ichiro Daigo. Keynote speeches were delivered by Associate Professor Lei Shi and Jun-Ming Zhu from Tsinghua University, Professor Sheng-Hui Cui and Tao Lin from IUE, CAS, Professor Eiji Yamasue and Dr. Jordi Cravioto from Ritsumeikan University, Professor Kazuyo Matsubae from Northeastern University (Japan), Professor Hiroki Hatayama from AIST, Professor Yasushi Kondo Waseda University and Associate Professor Luca Ciacci from Bologna University. These speeches discussed cutting-edge scientific topics, including urban material metabolism, life-cycle environmental impact assessment, and urban ecology/environmental. In addition, scholars and students from the University of Tokyo, Nagoya University, Northeastern University (Japan), Central South University and IUE, CAS, reported the latest research progresses related to the topics of metabolism and the recycling of building materials, steel, plastics, sludge, automobiles, nitrogen, chromium and nickel. Poster presentation was set to improve the communication between Chinese and Japanese young scholars and students. Doctoral and master students from universities and research institutions have presented and shared their latest research findings. Hao Min from IUE, CAS, Fu Chenling From Beijing Normal University, Shota Koketsu Masato Nakada, Junxi Liu, and Keijiro Tajima from the University of Tokyo won the best poster award.
This symposium is aims to discuss the latest progresses in the field of industry ecology, deepening the understanding of urbanization in resources and environment problems, as well as the opportunities and challenges. Besides, figure out further theoretical innovation and practical direction for the sustainable development of China and Japan, enhance communication between scholars and students in the field of industrial ecology, and explore appropriate pattern for the follow-up cooperation.
