Invited by CAS Centre for Ecxellence in Regional Atmospheric Environment, Professor LI Shaomeng of Environment Canada visited Institute of Urban Environment on January 19th and made an academic report titled “Shale Oil and Gas Hydraulic Fracturing: Environmental Impacts”.
On the report, LI Shaomeng firstly introduced in brief that exploitation of shale oil and gas had drived energy revolution in North America in the first decade of 21th century and resulted in rapid increase of energy and steep fall in oil price in North America. Then he introduced in detail the overview of shale oil and gas in North America and had an discussion on potential environment problem related to shale oil and gas hydraulic fracturing production technology. In the report, he also mentioned one case of atmospheric pollutant emission in shale gas exploitation in north part of Canada, Britain and Columbia and put forward with a method using aerial survey to calculate pullutant emission rate of natural gas exploiting facility. After the report, Director ZHU Yongguan awarded to Professor LI a appoinment letter for Distinguished Professor of CAS Center for Excellence in Regional Atmospheric Envrionment .
Professor LI Shaomeng is a doctoral supervisor, a senior researcher of Air Quality Institute, Environment Canada and a chairman of Global Aerosol Observation Group in World Meteorological Organization (WMO). He was admitted to University of Science and Technology of China in 1978, graducated from there in 1982, passed an entrance examination for postgraduate student of Chinese Academy of Sciences and became a student of the leading authority of Chinese meteorology, Mr. Ye Duzheng (who was the deputy director of Chinese Academy of Sciences then). He continuously obtained several funds from Institute of the United States Federal Government, National Center for Atmospheric Research, American and Canadian Federal Government and engaged in atmospheric chemistry research. Researcher LI Shaomeng’ research field is mainly atmospheric aerosol and transfers to research for cars and agricultural emission influence on regional armopheric air quality. Up to now, he has publish 155 papers on several internationally famous journals including Nature, Science, Geophys. Res. Lett., J. Geophys. Res., Environ. Sci. Tech., Atmos. Chem. Phys., Atmos. Environ., Atmos. Mmt. Tech. As he has made such remarkable achievements, he is exceptionally promoted as the youngest senior researcher by Environment Canada, he is also one of scientific advisor in global observation network of WMO and is engaged as Visiting Professor for University of Toronto, University of York, University of Waterloo, Fudan University, etc. Researcher LI is a member of editor commission for China Environmental Science, the associate editor of Journal of Geophysical Research, and reviewer for Nature and several American journals. He is review expert for American National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of British, Canada Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Atmospheric Science Foundation, Ministry of Environment, Department of Agriculture.
