The 18th UCAS-BHPB Scientific English Writing Training was held from April 21 to 24, 2014, at IUE. Prof. Xiangbin Zhu, Assistant Principal of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shaohua Chen, Deputy Director of IUE, and more than fifty postgraduates presented at the opening ceremony.
Deputy Director Chen gave a warm welcome to the guests and highlighted the importance of scientific English writing training. He said that the scientific English writing training plays an important role in improving postgraduates’ skills at English writing, obtaining cutting-edge scientific information from the world and transforming innovative achievements. Prof. Xiangbin Zhu introduced the background of the UCAS-BHPB Training Programme on scientific English writing and encouraged students to seize the opportunity to improve their English writing skills by communicating with two teachers, Dr. Margaret Cargill and Dr. Patrick James O’Connor, as much as possible.
Dr. Margaret Cargill and Dr. Patrick James O’ Connor are both from University of Adelaide, Australia, and have rich experience in teaching scientific English writing. They have cooperated with CAS on this subject for a long time. During the training, they detailed the expressions and writing methods which should be given special attention in English writing and instructed students in major problems found from their writing practices.
After the four-day systematic course, the training concluded with a speech entitled “Sci-Writing: Communicating Science Effectively in English, Training and Consultancy Advice” on April 24, 2014, and students who attended the whole training were awarded certificates at the closing ceremony.
