LU Yongxiang visited IUE

On February 3, Dr. LU Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, visited Insititute of Urban Environment(IUE), CAS.

Speaking highly of IUE’s achievements, Dr. LU Yongxiang pointed out that IUE should firstly embody cross-disciplinary principles in its development, and launch integrated research in physics, chemistry, life science and biometric technology, and informatics. Secondly, the research should be systematic. As a complicated environmental problem, urban environment requires an integrated development method to solve relevant problems. Urban environmental research should not only monitor the environment but also analyze the course of a city’s evolution based on monitoring results, and to understand problems and stimulate analysis from spatial and temporal measurements. Lastly, more efforts should be made to strengthen the creative value, to promote the transformation of technology into productivity and to enhance the combination of research with social science and humanity.

Dr. LU suggested that IUE’s overall layout be carried out on a three-dimensional base, with the intersection forming the key to IUE’s development. The length coordinate represents social demand, which is rural urban environment quality, ecosystem protection and people’s health; the width coordinate represents the disciplinary base of the Institute, including physics, chemistry, life science, informatics, materials science, technology and management; and the vertical coordinate represents platform construction, in the fields of technology network service, network monitoring, information and data analysis, consultancy, planning and popular science.
