On July 1 to 3, Institute of Urban Environment(IUE) held the First Cross-Strait Urban Environment Symposium. The symposium aimed at promoting the cross-strait academic exchanges and cooperation. Several issues of common concern including scientific research, technological innovation and talent cultivation in urban environment field were taken into discussion during the meeting.
The symposium started with opening speeches given by Professor Yong-Guan Zhu, the director of IUE, and Professor Pen-Chi Chiang, the specially-invited professor of Institute of Environmental Engineering, Taiwan University. And then Professor Pen-Chi Chiang gave an invited talk of Construction of Sustainable Water Supply Facilities Adapting Climatic Change followed by the invited talk of Pollution of Antibiotics Resistance Genes in Catchment Scale given by Professor Yong-Guan Zhu. Subsequently, more than ten distinguished experts coming from Taiwan, Xiamen, Canada and Peking all gave their wonderful reports.
On the morning of July 3, the accomplished experts had an enthusiastic discussion about Water Environment Security, Restoration of Contaminated Sites, Air Pollution Control, Wastewater and Waste Treatment Process. The experts exchanged their own perspective on many hot spots and difficult problems of urban environment research and also discussed the opportunities and challenges of cross-strait collaboration in environment research area.
The success of this symposium contributed to the development of discipline of IUE as well supplied a platform for exploring frontiers of science and technology, sharing research achievements, communicating issues, and making deep cooperation.
