Shi Erwei, Vice-President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, inspected the Institute of Urban Environment (IUE) on December 2nd, 2010, accompanied by Sun Dianyi, Deputy Director of CAS-Institute International Bureau, and Li Weihua, Director of Xiamen Science & Technology Bureau.

Zhu Yongguan, Director General of IUE, made a report about the development of IUE and emphasized the progress of research work, as well as sci-tech goals and strategic layout of the Twelfth Five Year Plan.

After Director Zhu’s report, Vice-President Shi gave a keynote speech. He spoke highly of IUE’s strategic planning, and emphasized that every member of IUE should work hard and make good use of China’s rapid urbanization and the status of IUE as the only institute dedicated to urban environment research in the world. IUE should establish new research directions, heighten research efforts in some new fields including ‘low carbon and efficient use of nitrogen and phosphorus’, and speed up the development of academic disciplines through the integrated project research. He also said that IUE should enhance Cross-Straits and international cooperation, based on its advantageous location. The young scientists should work harder, think ahead and be more creative, following the examples of older famous scientists.

In the afternoon, Zhao Jingzhu, Party Secretary of IUE, showed Vice-President Shi and his entourage around the host park of IUE, Research Centre of Urban Pollution Control and Restoration, and Key Lab of Urban Environment and Health.
